From January 29 to February 14, the Chinese Meteorological Administration will for the first time release a national meteorological index for discharging fireworks. According to a report by the Beijing Evening News 北京晚报, there are four levels: Level 1 means the atmospheric conditions are suitable for discharging fireworks; Level 2 is not quite suitable; Level 3 means not suitable and Level 4 is highly unsuitable.

The index is a result of social concerns over pollution caused by firecrackers during the Spring Festival. The Beijing Evening News article also says that a new environmentally-friendly firecracker invented this year might provide an alternative solution to not letting off fireworks. The’green’ firecracker does not contain sulfur and is said to release fewer PM2.5 pollutant particles than conventional fireworks.
