Ministry of Culture:

Xinhua: Commentary: Abe’s U.S. trip: sense or sensibility?

by Xinhua writer Zhu Dongyang

BEIJING, April 26 (Xinhua) — Sensibility is enticing, but when it comes to national and international interests, a wise man always chooses sense over sensibility, and pragmatism over Micawberism.

As Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will make a high-profile visit to the United States beginning Sunday, he should hold up rightist, nationalist and revisionist impulses, and roll out more prudent and thus wiser statements this time.

On the Capital Hill, under the global media spotlight, he should seize that opportunity to show remorse over Japan’s rightist swagger in recent years and make a long-awaited apology for his country’s wartime crimes, loud and clear.

But according to media reports on the draft of his upcoming address to the U.S. legislature, the piece, like other public statements he has made so far, is unrepentedly preoccupied with the game of words on history and platitude rhetoric of containing China.

Moreover, Abe had already said he intended not to repeat the apologies made his predecessors even in his World War II statement to be delivered later this year.

These unbridled moves, out of speculative calculation to pander to the Japanese right-wingers, are actually a slap in the face of Washington.

Like other allied countries, particularly Asian nations, the United States itself also suffered huge casualties from Japan’s ghastly assaults during that war and made incredible sacrifice in defeating the island country.

It’s high time that Abe resorted to prudence rather than nationalist impulsion in the week-long U.S. visit, and avoided sending defiant messages on history and territorial issues that contradict his previous self-claim as a peace defender.

And for its part, Washington should also refrain from the urge to take Tokyo as an instrument to pursue its decades-old policy of containing China in pushing forward its “pivot to Asia” initiative.

After all, such a capricious and provocative ally as Japan has been proved to be a trouble maker, which has frequently tousled the stability of the Asia-Pacific region, and embroiled the U.S. in its squabbles with irritated neighbors over historical feuds and territory brawls.

U.S. President Barack Obama should also be vigilant not to be lured by and hijacked by those rightist statements of the strident Japanese leader during the visit.

It has long been a consensus between Chinese and U.S. leaders that the world’s two largest economies should cling to cooperation rather than confrontation.

Xinhua: Israel marks centenary of Armenian genocide
English.news.cn 2015-04-26 22:06:24 [More]

JERUSALEM, April 26 (Xinhua) — Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin hosted Sunday an official ceremony in Jerusalem to mark the 100th anniversary for the Armenian genocide, in a first of its kind gesture in Israel.

In the ceremony attended by Armenian leaders, Rivlin said that “the Armenian people were the first victims of modern mass killing.” The president refrained from using the word “genocide” in his speech.

The killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire around 1915 was never acknowledged by Israel as genocide.

“We do not seek to put the blame on any specific country, but rather identify with the victims and the horrible results of the massacre,” Rivlin said in broadcast remarks.

The president also stressed the obligation of the Jewish people to remember the massacre.

“Two weeks ago, we the Jewish people, commemorated Holocaust Remembrance Day. After this horrible Holocaust, commemorating the tragedy of the Armenian people is our Jewish obligation; a human and moral one,” the president said.

Rivlin’s failure to acknowledge the Armenian genocide angered Armenian leaders.

During the meeting, representative of the Armenian Patriarch, Archbishop Aris Shirvanian, expressed his disappointment that the State of Israel had not related to the killings of the Armenian people as “genocide.”

Meanwhile, Armenia has been pushing for Turkey to acknowledge the genocide.

However, Turkish officials acknowledged the death of large numbers of Armenians, but said the overall death toll was exaggerated and the deaths occurred in the civil unrest during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, when Turks were also killed.

Recently, Israel’s stand on the Armenian genocide has started to change after its relations with Turkey soared.

On Friday, Israel sent for the first time an official delegation of parliament members to attend the 100th anniversary ceremonies in Yerevan.
